data-mm-id=”_aqzmwn8d0″>On Opening Day, we have been reminded just how bad some of Major League Baseball's umpires are. Earlier on Thursday, Laz Diaz started things off, and later in the afternoon, Dan Iassogna got into the act. And then…The Toronto Blue Jays beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-9 in their opening game, and got a little help along the way. With the Cardinals up 7-6 in the bottom of the 7th, reliever Adam Cimber faced second baseman Brendan Donovan with runners on first and second and two outs. On a 1-0 count, Cimber threw a pitch that looked like it was a foot off-the-plate. Iassogna gave him the call. Check this out:Umpire Dan Iassogna with a strong entry for worst call of opening day. This pitch to Brendan Donovan missed outside by 6.24 inches#Cardinals #BlueJays pic.twitter.com/Ttq73XcqLv— Umpire Auditor (@UmpireAuditor) March 30, 2023It was more than six inches outside. That's insanity. The count was 1-1 instead of 2-0, which completely changed the at-bat. Donovan wound up popping out to shortstop ending a rally. The crazy part is there's absolutely no accountability for Iassogna missing that call. It was nowhere near the plate and he confidently called it a strike. And we'll just move on with absolutely nothing happening to him. The Blue Jays wound up outscoring the Cardinals 4-2 the rest of the way to win the game 10-9.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is adamant Steven Gerrard will return to management but hopes he takes some time away from football after being axed by Aston Villa.
Gerrard was sacked following Villa s defeat to Fulham on Thursday, which left the club above the Premier League s relegation zone on only goals scored, having picked up just two wins in the opening 11 matches of the campaign.
Previously touted by many as Klopp s eventual successor at Anfield, Gerrard must now rebuild his reputation after a disappointing stint with Villa that came following success in Scotland with Rangers.
Klopp does not expect that to be an issue for the former Liverpool captain, although he hopes he does not rush back into a role.
I m very sure he will come back from that. D…

Javi Martinez said Spain will not be losing sleep if they are beaten by the Netherlands in their FIFA World Cup opener on Friday.
Spain kick off their title defence against the Netherlands in Group B action in Salvador a rematch of the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa.
The Spanish are known to make slow starts at international tournaments, having lost their opening game to Switzerland (1-0) at the 2010 World Cup and drawn with Croatia (1-1) in game one at Euro 2012.
Both results were minor blemishes as Spain went on to win the World Cup in South Africa and the European Championships in Ukraine/Russia two years later.

Aston Villa are close to finalising Charles N Zogbia s transfer from Wigan, with Alex McLeish backing the winger to star at Villa Park.
The two English Premier League clubs are believed to have agreed a fee of 9.5 million pounds for N Zogbia.
