The Wells Fargo Championship is the sixth of eight signature events on the 2024 season and begins Thursday at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. The event features a $20 million purse and increased FedEx Cup points. It also provides the 69-player field an opportunity to compete without red-hot Scottie Scheffler to contend with ahead of next week's PGA Championship. Our golf experts preview the tournament and provide their favorite prop picks along with best bets to win this week. WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP Location: Wells Fargo Championship, Charlotte, N.C., May 9-12 Course: Quail Hollow Club (Par 71, 7,558 Yards) Purse: $20M (Winners: $3.6M) Defending Champion: Wyndham Clark FedEx Cup Leader: Scottie Scheffler HOW TO FOLLOW TV: Thursday-Friday: 2-6 p.m. (Golf Channel); Saturday-Sunday: 1-3 p.m. (GC), 3-6 p.m. (CBS) Streaming (ESPN+): Thursday-Friday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. ET; Saturday-Sunday, 7:15 a.m.-6 p.m. X: @WellsFargoGolf PROP PICKS –Xander Schauffele to Beat Rory McIlroy (+105 at DraftKings): Yes, McIlroy is coming off a win in his last start and yes, he has an excellent track record at Quail Hollow. But the win came in a team event against a modest field and his results to date in 2024 have been mediocre by his standards. While Schauffele doesn't hoist a lot of trophies, he does rack up top-10s — including seven through his first 10 starts this season. –Hideki Matsuyama Top 20 (+100 at BetMGM): Matsuyama tees it up for the first time since the Masters, where he tied for 38th. Previous to that, he had a win and was no worse than T12 in four starts. The Japanese star is well rested and only needs to beat 49 players for this prop to pay. –Tommy Fleetwood Top Englishman (+100 at DraftKings): Fleetwood tied for fifth here last year and had a pair of top-10s before tying for 49th in his most recent start at the RBC Heritage. The other two players in this prop are Matt Fitzpatrick (+150) and Justin Rose (+450). Fitzpatrick tied for 35th at Quail Hollow last year while Rose was not in the field. 2024 Prop Picks Record: 25-27-1 BEST BETS –Rory McIlroy (+750 at BetMGM) is coming off a victory at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Shane Lowry and has three career victories at Quail Hollow. He is the book's biggest liability this week as McIlroy leads the field with 22.2 percent of the money backing him to win since opening at +900. –Xander Schauffele (+1000) has four consecutive top-20s, including a T2 at The Players. He finished second here last year. Schauffele is seeking his first stroke-play victory since the 2022 Scottish Open. –Clark (+1400) is seeking to become the first player to successfully defend at the Wells Fargo. He set the tournament scoring record of 265 last year. Clark is BetMGM's second-biggest liability, drawing 9.6 percent of the money as his odds have shortened from +1900. He also leads the field at DraftKings with 18 percent of the money backing him at the same odds. –Max Homa (+2200) has won two of the previous four editions of the event and finished T8 last year. He also went 4-0-0 at Quail Hollow in the 2022 Presidents Cup. Homa is BetMGM's third-biggest liability this week, drawing 8.4 percent of the money since opening at +2500. –Tommy Fleetwood (+2500) had a T7 at the Valero Texas Open and T3 at the Masters before settling for a T49 at the RBC Heritage in his past three starts. –Cameron Young is still seeking his maiden PGA Tour victory, but is second in the field at DraftKings with 7 percent of the money backing him at +2500. NOTES –Scheffler is not in the field as he and wife Meredith await the birth of their first child. The 69-player field does include seven of the top 10 players in the world rankings and eight of the top 10 in the FedEx Cup rankings. –Quail Hollow resident Webb Simpson is in the field on a sponsor's exemption along with Gary Woodland, Adam Scott and Matt Kuchar. –Quail Hollow, known as the "Green Mile," underwent a renovation after last year's tournament that included redoing all of the tees and greens and installing a new drainage system. –Field Level Media Relatedbest online betting sitenewly launched sportsbookbest betting appsin game bettingstream live sportsmeaning of cash out

Swansea City have named former Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal as their new manager to replace the sacked Paul Clement on an initial deal until the end of the season.
Clement was dismissed as Swansea boss earlier this month after a run of nine defeats in 11 matches left them bottom of the Premier League, with midfielder Leon Britton overseeing the last two games in caretaker charge.
The Welsh club have now turned to Portuguese boss Carvalhal, who was dismissed by the Owls on Christmas Eve having claimed just six wins in the Championship this term.
We felt we needed to get the managerial situation resolved as soon as possible and while the timing is not always perfect, we can look forward to the second half of the campaign with renewed optimism, chai…
West Ham are chasing Brentford striker Scott Hogan after a failed move for Jermain Defoe
First, there was Jermain Defoe and now it is Brentford’s Scott Hogan, it seems West Ham are desperate to sign a striker in the January transfer window.
The Hammers were told by Defoe’s current club Sunderland he is not for sale, much to the relief of Black Cats boss David Moyes.
Defoe, of course, started his professional career with the Irons and a return looked on the cards for the 34-year-old.
However, even the clubs owners have realised just how important Defoe is to the Black Cats chances of staying in the Premier League. Now the Hammers have turned their attentions to Scott Hogan.

Fulham have named Scott Parker as their permanent head coach following a three-month spell in caretaker charge.
Parker took the reins after Claudio Ranieri was sacked at the end of February and, despite overseeing the Cottagers relegations from the Premier League, he has been entrusted to take charge of the club full time.
The former England international guided Fulham to three top-flight wins in a row after relegation was confirmed by a 4-1 defeat at Watford on April 2, but that winning run came to an end against Wolves last weekend.
The players, staff and fans have all been fantastic with me since I took temporary charge, Parker said.
We are now all focused on ending this campaign with a positive result on Sunday against Newcastle and look for…
Premier League leaders Manchester City have sealed the club-record signing of Aymeric Laporte, the defender joining from Athletic Bilbao after his €65million release clause was reportedly met.
A deal for the uncapped Frenchman has been mooted since Pep Guardiola s arrival in 2016 and was finally completed on Tuesday, with the 23-year-old signing a contract until 2023.
Laporte, who made 222 appearances for Athletic, will wear the number 14 shirt at City.

Virgil van Dijk was flattered by Erling Haaland s belief the Netherlands captain is the best defender in the world.
The pair are set to face off when the Oranje travel to Norway for their 2022 World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.
An intriguing duel should challenge both players, with Haaland full of praise for Van Dijk when he addressed the media on Monday.
I think he is the best defender. I think quite a few others in the room agree with me on that, the Borussia Dortmund forward said.
He is fast, strong and smart, and those are three important things you must have.
Those comments were on Tuesday put to Van Dijk, who replied: Did he say that? That s nice of him.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo fears another halt to Premier League action amid the coronavirus pandemic could give the country s biggest clubs the opportunity to launch a European Super League.
The English football authorities are carrying out regular tests on players and club staff, and the number of positive cases is rising, with 40 declared in the Premier League last week.
This has led to a number of games being postponed, while Tottenham will play Fulham not Aston Villa on Wednesday as part of the rearranged schedule.
Spurs had been due to travel to Villa Park for a midweek fixture, but their opponents requested a new date due to their players and staff either testing positive for COVID-19 or being placed in isolation as close contacts.

James Tavernier’s equaliser sent Rangers into the Champions League play-offs as an improved second-half display in Switzerland saw them overcome Servette.
Tavernier’s header five minutes after the break sealed a 1-1 draw which handed Michael Beale’s side a 3-2 aggregate win.
Rangers had failed to test the home goalkeeper in the first half and might have been further behind at the interval but they were the better side after the break and had chances to win the second leg.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic s milestone stoppage-time strike salvaged a 1-1 draw for Serie A leaders Milan at Udinese on Saturday.
Milan s miserable week looked set to take another turn for the worse after Beto gave Udinese a first-half lead at Dacia Arena, four days after the Rossoneri were knocked out of the Champions League by Liverpool.
But Ibrahimovic rescued a point with an acrobatic volley in time added on, taking his goal tally to 300 in Europe s top five leagues.
Isaac Success was then shown a red card for violent conduct as Udinese had to settle for a point in their first game under interim head coach Gabriele Cioffi, who stepped in when Luca Gotti was sacked this week.

Adelaide United striker Bruce Djite has pledged his future to the club, announcing a new two-year contract on Tuesday.
Djite, who is in his second stint with United and has made 75 A-League appearances scoring 22 goals, will remain with the club until the end of the 2014/15 season.
The 25-year-old s future was in some doubt after struggling for form in a part-time role off the bench as coach John Kosmina opted to go without a recognised striker to accommodate Argentine duo Jeronimo Neumann and Marcelo Carrusca, plus marquee star Dario Vidosic.
However the powerful right-footer returned to the starting fold three weeks ago with a goal in the 2-1 loss to league leaders Central Coast before bossing Melbourne Victory and Wellington s defences in impressive back-to-b…
